First Labor Day
The first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday 5 September, 1882 by Central Labor Union in the New York City. The founder of Labor Day is a contention between the Peter MecGuire (co-founder of American Federation of Labor) and the Matthew Maguire (Secretary of International Association of Machinists)
Later Celebrations
Workers in scores of nations on Saturday will mark the first of May. Socialists and practicing communists will wave red banners in the streets.
Throw in a few anarchists and you have the makings of May Day, the traditional International Workers' Day celebrated around the world.
That event was what has become known as the "Haymarket Massacre," and it looms larger than life for millions of workers all over the globe. Labor Day comes with may events like USA Baseball Labor Day Cup 2010.
